Julen Lopetegui has been appointed as West Ham United's new manager following the sacking of David Moyes.

The Spaniard arrives at the London Stadium with a reputation as one of Europe's most highly-rated coaches, having previously managed Real Madrid, Sevilla and the Spain national team.

Lopetegui has signed a three-year contract with the Hammers and becomes the club's fifth permanent manager in the last seven years.

Speaking to The Athletic in his first interview since his appointment, Lopetegui said he was "delighted" to be joining West Ham and vowed to make a "big noise" at the London Stadium.

"I am very excited to be here at West Ham," said Lopetegui.

"I have been very impressed with the club's ambition and the quality of the squad.

"I am confident that we can achieve great things together and I am looking forward to getting started."

Lopetegui explains why he was prepared to accept the risk of a relegation battle

Lopetegui has been out of work since leaving Wolves three days before the start of the 2023/24 season, but he has continued to live in the UK.

The Spaniard was linked with a number of other Premier League clubs, including Brighton and Southampton, but he has opted to join West Ham.

In his interview with The Athletic, Lopetegui explained why he was prepared to accept the risk of a relegation battle.

"I am not afraid of a challenge," said Lopetegui.

"I know that West Ham are in a difficult position, but I am confident that we can turn things around.

"I have a lot of experience in managing teams in difficult situations and I am confident that I can help West Ham stay in the Premier League.
