WEB Jamaal Bowman faces a tough re-election race
The Democratic incumbent is being challenged by a moderate White county executive
Bowman was elected to the House during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020
WEB Jamaal Anthony Bowman is an American politician and former educator serving as the U.S. Representative for New York's 16th congressional district. A member of the Democratic Party, he has been in office since 2021.
Bowman was born and raised in New York City, spending his early years in public housing and rent-controlled apartments. He attended public schools in the Bronx and graduated from the High School of Art and Design. Bowman went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Columbia University and a Master of Arts in education from Manhattanville College.
Before entering politics, Bowman worked as a middle school principal and teacher in the New York City public school system. He was also a founding member of the New York City Coalition for Educational Justice.
Bowman was elected to the House of Representatives in 2020, defeating incumbent Eliot L. Engel in the Democratic primary. He was one of several progressive candidates who defeated incumbents in the 2020 Democratic primaries.
Bowman is a member of the House Committee on Education and Labor and the House Committee on the Judiciary. He is also a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus.
